Alfred Pedersen & Søn – Why should good vegetables go to waste?

06.06.2020

Next summer, waste sorting in Denmark will enter a new chapter. By then, all Danes and all businesses will sort their waste into ten fractions – in the same way, no matter where you live in the country. This is a huge step forward for the green transition in Denmark.

As a major player in the recycling of organic and animal residues, Daka Denmark welcomes the political settlement on the new Climate Plan for a Green Waste Sector and Circular Economy. The broad settlement and the fast negotiation process show strong support for Denmark to take the lead in making the most of the planet’s resources.

In other words, Denmark has embarked on a transition from a linear to a circular economy that pays off. Fifty years ago, it was perfectly natural to use and throw away resources. Smoky landfills were part of the landscape and later incinerators, which efficiently convert waste into energy. In 50 years our children and grandchildren will look back in wonder at a time when this behaviour was commonplace and the planet’s precious resources went up in smoke.

With this new plan, we have taken a decisive step towards that future, where we no longer talk about waste, but about valuable resources. Close cooperation between municipalities and private actors specialised in transforming waste into recyclable resources can catalyse and support this development. Internationally, the market for recycling and circular economy is already developing rapidly. Now Denmark and Danish companies are joining the race to create the green solutions of the future and thus green jobs.

The agreement puts great pressure on municipalities and private companies to come up with new schemes, guidelines, containers etc. at the same time as municipalities have to manage the transition from incineration to recycling. This is a major task, and Daka Denmark is ready to assist with clarification and advice on getting new, efficient and competitive schemes up and running, not least in relation to the fractions with which we have the most contact, including organic and animal residues.

The Conciliation Group wants to see a strong recycling sector that can ensure we use resources more wisely, more intelligently and more responsibly. They will get it. We are happy to take up that gauntlet, because ambitious goals require ambitious companies and ambitious solutions. We are ready, so let’s get started.
